House to Half — 18" x 14"

I have been asked to supply art work and images of my work for many theater and lighting text books. I love doing this because it encompasses many of my life’s love’s together. Rita Craver, a very talented woman asked me to create chapter art for a theatrical text book she was writing; “Stagecraft Fundamentals.” The chapter house to half was about the working knowledge required to design lighting for the stage; the real nuts and bolts. In my work I design many facility renovations. The starting point is always the physical systems and facility. I started to think about what she was doing and how to represent it, the history of the equipment. I then found a picture of an old dimmer I removed, for its time “State Of The Art”; yet now very dated. I wanted to represent the past and future, our tools to create on stage, the overall picture where those tools change but, the limitless vision of imagination remains the same. I worked with these mechanical monsters when I started in the theater all the time. As they faded away I saw them not as tools but, mechanical sculpture. I took the picture and moved the arm to mid-position which would be half. Then warped and extruded the image to enhance its sculptural and mechanical nature. I then set it in a proscenium box of textures to emulate the fabrics we use. Representing the manipulation we use to bring life to the stage.
